One dead and eleven injured after bus overturns in La Gomera

A 73-year-old woman has died and 11 other people have been injured, some seriously, after a public transport bus with 20 people on board overturned in La Gomera yesterday morning (Tuesday).

The crash happened at around 8.30am on the GM-2 main road near San Sebastián de La Gomera, when the bus veered off the road and tumbled down a slope.

Emergency services say the vehicle was operating a regular route between Alajeró and San Sebastián when it left the carriageway and overturned. The alarm was raised at 8.42am, prompting a major emergency response involving ambulances, a medical helicopter, police and volunteer teams.

Victims taken to hospital

According to the Canary Islands’ Emergency Coordination Centre (CECOES), all those injured were taken to Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe Hospital. Several required urgent medical care, and at least three people sustained serious injuries.

A 69-year-old man suffered serious spinal trauma and is expected to be airlifted to the University Hospital Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria in Tenerife.

Two women, aged 63 and 67, were treated for serious injuries, including fractures and pelvic trauma. Others injured ranged in age from 20 to 76, with conditions ranging from moderate to minor injuries, including hip injuries, limb trauma, and anxiety attacks.

Road closed, investigation underway

Authorities have closed the GM-2 in the area and diverted traffic via the GM-1 and El Rejo. The cause of the accident is currently under investigation.

Residents are being urged not to approach the crash site to avoid disrupting emergency operations.
