New elderly care centre to open in Tenerife by 2027

Garachico is set to get a new elderly care facility, with the centre expected to open its doors in early 2027. The purpose-built complex, located in the north of Tenerife, will offer 99 residential places and 25 day care spaces, built on land donated by the local council.

The Canary Islands Government confirmed the plans on Tuesday, describing the project as a “definitive solution” to meet the growing needs for care of the area’s ageing population.

Officials say the new centre will play a vital role in improving access to long-term care and support for elderly residents in the region, as it will primarily benefit elderly residents who require full-time support or daytime assistance but wish to remain close to their local community.

It will also offer a lifeline for families who are currently struggling to care for older relatives at home.

Once the centre is up and running, applications for both residential and day care places will be handled through the Canary Islands’ public care system.

Assessments will be carried out by local social services, with priority given to those with the highest level of need. Families will be able to apply through their local council or health centre, where social workers will be on hand to help with the process.
