A 32-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of child abandonment after her two-year-old daughter was found wandering alone and confused in a street in Arrecife on the morning of 11th February.

According to an official press release, the incident occurred at around 8.30am, when a driver spotted the toddler crossing a public road by herself, wearing only a nappy.

Shocked by the situation, he stopped his vehicle, comforted the crying child, and immediately alerted the Policía Nacional.

Child alone for over an hour

Officers quickly arrived and began making enquiries, eventually identifying and locating the girl’s mother. Police say the woman had left the child at home alone for more than an hour, during which time the toddler left the property and ended up in the street in “serious danger”.

The case was taken over by the Family and Women’s Unit (UFAM), which arrested the mother as the suspected perpetrator of a child-abandonment offence. After completing the necessary procedures, she was placed before the competent judicial authority to be charged.
