More than twenty people, including four who were injured, had to be evacuated in the early hours of Tuesday morning after a fire broke out in a building in Arona. The blaze caught residents by surprise on the top floor of the property, an area divided into small rooms where around 22 people live.
Inside the building, emergency crews found tiny, unventilated rooms, water pooling in the corridors, debris falling from the ceiling, and just a single shared bathroom.
Many of the occupants, who have ended up there for very different reasons, pay up to €600 a month for nothing more than a bed.
These substandard living spaces are located on Calle El Coronel in Los Cristianos. Due to the thick smoke filling the building, residents had to be evacuated via the rooftop shortly before 5.00am. Early indications suggest the fire may have been triggered by a microwave.
Firefighters continued extinguishing and ventilating the building until nearly 9.00am. Several ambulances remained on scene to treat residents, four of whom were taken to medical centres for smoke inhalation, although none suffered serious injuries.
The affected individuals include three women, aged 86, 71, and 35, who were transferred to the Nuestra Señora de Candelaria University Hospital and Hospiten Sur, as well as a 40-year-old man who was also taken to hospital for smoke inhalation.
