A man in Tenerife has been sentenced to four years in prison for attempting to rape a woman who had gone to his business looking for work. The Provincial Court of Santa Cruz de Tenerife also ordered him to pay €15,200 in compensation for the physical and emotional harm caused.

The attack took place in July 2019, after the victim handed in her CV for a waitress job. Instead of ending the meeting, the man, who was the manager, lured her to a nearby apartment under the pretext of showing her a place to rent.

According to the ruling, once inside the darkened flat, the man began touching her without consent. When she resisted, he grabbed her by the hair and neck, dragged her into a bedroom, and threw her onto a bed in an attempt to rape her. The woman fought him off, but he carried out other sexual assaults before issuing chilling threats, warning her to stay silent or he would harm both her and her son.

The victim suffered an acute anxiety attack and was taken to hospital, where doctors confirmed she had bruising consistent with her testimony.

The court described the attack as an abuse of authority, increasing the severity of the sentence beyond what prosecutors had originally requested. The man denied the charges, claiming the woman had initiated physical contact, but the judges found her account credible and supported by medical evidence.

In addition to his prison term, he must pay €15,200 in damages. The victim had initially sought €25,000 in compensation, while the prosecution had asked for a lighter penalty of three and a half years and €3,200 in damages.

The judges concluded that his actions caused serious psychological trauma and represented a grave betrayal of trust, as the woman had been vulnerable while seeking work.
