A man has died after falling from the cliffs in the coastal area of Ajuy, in the municipality of Pájara in Fuerteventura, according to reports from the Canary Islands’ Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES).

The incident happened at around 2:00pm yesterday (Friday) when emergency services were alerted that a person had fallen from a cliff along the coastline.

An emergency and rescue helicopter was dispatched to the location given, where rescue crews had located the man floating in the sea below the cliffs and carried out a recovery operation.

Emergency rescue attempt

After retrieving the man from the water, rescuers confirmed that he was in cardiac arrest. He was flown by helicopter to the helipad at Fuerteventura General Hospital while cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was performed during the flight.

Once on land, hospital medical staff continued advanced resuscitation efforts, but they were unable to revive him and his death was confirmed shortly afterwards.

Emergency services response

Paramedics from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) also attended to three other people who were at the scene at the time of the incident.

Firefighters from Pájara, Local Police and the Guardia Civil also took part in the emergency response and assisted with the operation.
