Man dies after being swept out to sea in the south of Tenerife

A man in his 60s died yesterday (Thursday) after being rescued from the area by the natural pool at Isla Cangrejo, located in Santiago del Teide on the west coast of Tenerife. The incident occurred at approximately 12:30pm, when the swimmer, who was outside the natural pool, struggled to reach the shore and found himself in distress in the open sea.

The Canary Islands Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES) received the alert and promptly activated a large-scale rescue operation. The resources mobilised included a GES rescue helicopter, Maritime Rescue services, Tenerife Firefighters, as well as ambulances and the Local Police and Guardia Civil.

Before emergency teams arrived, a private boat managed to rescue the swimmer from the water and took him to the Los Gigantes dock, where the emergency personnel were waiting.

Paramedics immediately began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the man, who was in cardiac arrest and showing signs of drowning.

Despite the efforts of the emergency teams, the resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful. A doctor from the Primary Care team officially declared the man's death at the scene. Authorities, including the Guardia Civil have begun investigations and are preparing official reports on the incident.
