A man has been arrested in Tenerife after police uncovered 31 kilos of hashish hidden in his car, which arrived on a ferry from Gran Canaria. The discovery was made during a joint operation by officers from the Customs Surveillance Unit of the Tax Agency and the Guardia Civil’s Fiscal and Border Analysis Unit (Udaiff) at the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

What began as a routine inspection quickly escalated after officers noticed the driver’s nervous behaviour and inconsistent answers. A powerful smell of cannabis was also coming from the vehicle, which led agents to carry out a full search.

Inside the boot, officers found several tightly wrapped packages containing the drugs. Tests confirmed the substance was hashish, weighing more than 31 kilos in total. The driver was immediately arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking.

The man, together with the seized drugs, has been handed over to the judicial authorities as the investigation continues.

This latest arrest is one of several major drug busts at the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife in 2025. In a similar case earlier this year, officers stopped a vehicle arriving by ferry from Gran Canaria and discovered more than 90 kilos of cocaine hidden beneath the boot floor.

In another large-scale operation just a few months ago, authorities seized over two tonnes of cocaine and arrested 34 people linked to an organised trafficking network operating between the Canary Islands and mainland Spain.
