The National Police have arrested a man accused of breaking into an apartment in Los Cristianos, in the south of Tenerife, while the family were inside at the time. The break-in happened in November at a fourth-floor flat where a couple lived with their two young daughters.
According to investigators, the suspect accessed the property by climbing down from the rooftop using two knotted bedsheets, descending through the building’s interior courtyard and entering the home through the bedroom window shared by the two children.
Family confronted intruder
The situation escalated when the mother entered the room and discovered the intruder. Panic-stricken, she fled to alert the rest of the family. The parents and one of the children locked themselves inside a room, while the other daughter took refuge in the bathroom and barricaded the door.
Instead of fleeing, the intruder pursued the woman and attempted to force open the doors behind which they were sheltering. At one point, he even reached his arm through a ventilation window, creating moments of extreme tension and fear for the family.
Suspect fled with stolen items
Unable to gain access and aware that the victims were in contact with the police, the suspect eventually fled, taking a laptop and a mobile phone belonging to one of the daughters.
Following an investigation, officers were able to fully identify the suspect, who was later recognised by the victims. After several weeks, the police have now located the man in Santa Cruz and arrested him.
In addition to the Los Cristianos break-in, the detainee is also accused of a separate burglary at a school in Santa Cruz and was already wanted in connection with that case. He has been placed at the disposal of the competent judicial authority as the alleged perpetrator of two counts of robbery with force.
