A man has been arrested in Tenerife after 90.5 kilograms of cocaine was discovered hidden in the floor of his minibus upon arrival by ferry from Gran Canaria.
The operation was carried out at the port of Santa Cruz by officers of the Guardia Civil’s Fiscal and Borders Analysis Unit (UDAIFF) in collaboration with Customs Surveillance of the Tax Agency.
Nervous behaviour raised suspicions
The driver, travelling in a large vehicle, was stopped during a routine anti-smuggling control. According to investigators, his nervous demeanour and contradictory answers during questioning alerted officers.
Following a thorough inspection, agents located several packages concealed beneath the boot floor. A field drug test confirmed the substance was cocaine.
Judicial proceedings underway
The man was immediately detained, and both he and the seized drugs have been placed at the disposal of the judicial authorities.
The Guardia Civil continues to intensify controls at Canary Islands ports, given their strategic role in drug trafficking routes between Europe, Africa, and the Americas.
