MONDAY WEATHER: Storm Regina to bring widespread heavy rain to the Canary Islands

A new high-impact storm system named Regina is heading to towards the Canary Islands, and is expected to bring widespread heavy rain starting later today (Monday), according to the Spanish Met Office, AEMET.
It is approaching from the north west and will reach La Palma, El Hierro, La Gomera, and Tenerife first, which have an active yellow alert for strong wind with gusts expected to reach up to 70 km/h, before moving across the archipelago towards Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote.

Tenerife
Northern areas will be mostly cloudy in the morning with a slight chance of light showers. Clearer spells from midday, followed by returning cloud and light to moderate rain later, which may be persistent or fall as showers. Cloudier in the south during the afternoon. Maximum temperatures rising slightly in the north and west. Light frost is possible at high elevations. Northerly winds turning north-west and strengthening through the afternoon and evening, with very strong gusts possible on peaks, the ridge, and north-east and north-west slopes.
General temperatures: Low of 15° and high of 22°C.
Gran Canaria
In the north, mostly cloudy early on with a small chance of light, occasional rain. Clearer skies in the afternoon before cloud and light to moderate rain return at night. Elsewhere, cloudy intervals. Temperatures stable, with northern highs rising slightly. Winds from the north, turning north-west and strengthening late, with possible very strong gusts on peaks and east/west slopes.
General temperatures: Low of 15° and high of 21°C.
Lanzarote
Mostly cloudy during the morning, with sunny spells later. Cloud cover and light to moderate rain will return at night. Minimum temperatures unchanged or slightly lower; maximums largely steady. Moderate northerly winds turning north-westerly, strengthening to strong late in the day.
General temperatures: Low of 14° and high of 20°C.
Fuerteventura
Cloudy through the morning with clearer intervals in the afternoon. Cloud and light to locally moderate rain will return late evening. Temperatures stable. Moderate northerly winds turning north-westerly and increasing to strong late in the day.
General temperatures: Low of 15° and high of 20°C.
A Run of Powerful Winter Storms
Storm Regina is the 14th named high-impact storm of the winter period (December to February), and the 17th of the season since it began in October. this equals the record set in the 2023/24 season, when the 17th storm, Renata, was named on 14th April.
