The Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) are forecasting widespread calima – a dense haze of Saharan dust – across all Canary Islands today, Monday, with temperatures up to 28°C and mostly clear skies.

Minimum temperatures will remain similar to recent days or rise slightly, while summit areas on the higher islands may see a moderate drop. Daytime highs will stay stable, with a slight dip expected in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.

Winds will blow from the east, mostly light to moderate, but may strengthen during the early morning and late morning in parts of Lanzarote’s northwest and western Fuerteventura.

At sea, moderate northeast winds and small waves are expected in the western islands, with lighter easterly winds in the east. A northwest swell of 1–2 metres will affect the entire archipelago.

MONDAY WEATHER: AEMET warns thick Calima set to cover the Canary Islands

Island by island forecast for Monday 23rd February 2026:

Tenerife
Tenerife will be affected by heavy calima, especially on the south and east coasts, with high cloud arriving from mid-morning. Minimum temperatures will remain similar to recent days but may rise slightly in the northeast and in lower northern and eastern districts, while central highland areas will cool. Maximum temperatures will stay largely unchanged. Winds will be light to moderate from the east, and the dusty conditions may be particularly noticeable in tourist areas along the coast.
General temperatures: Low of 19°C and high of 28°C.

Gran Canaria
Gran Canaria will start the week with bright but very hazy weather. The calima will be widespread and particularly intense on the southern and eastern sides of the island. Temperatures at night will show little change, with slightly higher values in the north, while the summit areas will cool down. Daytime temperatures will remain stable on the coast but may fall slightly inland. Light to moderate easterly winds will prevail, and visibility could be poor at higher elevations.
General temperatures: Low of 20°C and high of 24°C.

Lanzarote
Lanzarote will experience a very hazy day, with clear skies early on and high cloud increasing during the afternoon. The calima will be noticeable from the morning and is likely to reduce visibility at times. Night-time temperatures will rise slightly, while daytime highs may dip a little. Winds from the east will generally be light to moderate but could become stronger for a time in inland areas and along the northwest, before easing later in the day.
General temperatures: Low of 17°C and high of 25°C.

Fuerteventura
Fuerteventura will also see thick calima throughout Monday, giving the island a dusty, whitish appearance. Sunshine will be filtered through high cloud later in the day. Minimum temperatures will rise slightly, and maximums may fall a little inland but will remain steady along the coast. Easterly to southeasterly winds will be light to moderate, although they may strengthen during the first half of the day in central areas and on the northwest-facing slopes. Conditions will become calmer by the afternoon as winds turn light and northeasterly.
General temperatures: Low of 18°C and high of 24°C.

Residents and holidaymakers across the islands are advised to take precautions due to the poor air quality. Those with respiratory conditions should avoid strenuous outdoor activities, and visibility on roads may be reduced. Dust deposits are also expected on cars, terraces and swimming pools as the calima intensifies.
