Lorry fire near petrol station sparks panic in Tenerife

A refrigerated lorry caught fire near a petrol station in Tenerife this morning, Friday, triggering alarm among witnesses and leading to a large deployment of emergency response teams.

The incident happened close to the El Chorrillo petrol station in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Emergency resources, including fire crews, Local and National Police, and Civil Protection units, were quickly dispatched to the scene by the Emergency Services Control Centre.

Thick plumes of smoke could be seen rising from the vehicle, which led to a flood of calls to the 112 emergency call centre, which reported they received multiple reports within minutes of the blaze starting.

Firefighters managed to bring the fire under control and confirmed that the lorry driver was able to escape the vehicle without assistance, and that no one was injured in the incident.

Despite the fire breaking out near a petrol station, authorities said the facility was not affected and there was no risk to the public. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
