A group of quick-thinking citizens detained a teenager in Arrecife on Tuesday morning after he violently robbed a young woman in the city centre. The incident occurred at around 11 am when the 25-year-old victim was suddenly attacked in the street and had her mobile phone snatched from her hand using the “tirón” method, a forceful grab-and-run technique commonly used in street thefts.
According to the National Police, the thief also attempted to steal her handbag, causing the woman to fall heavily to the ground and suffer multiple injuries. Her cries for help alerted several people nearby, who immediately ran after the suspect, caught up with him, and held him until police units arrived.
Once witnesses alerted the emergency services, officers were dispatched to the street, where they took statements from the victim and those who had intervened. The teenager was arrested on suspicion of robbery with violence and later handed over to the Juvenile Prosecutor’s Office.
The victim was treated by medical personnel and transferred to the General Hospital for further care.
The National Police said the role of public cooperation was crucial, stressing that the swift reaction of nearby residents was key to resolving the case within minutes.
