A section of the Famara cliffs in northern Lanzarote collapsed this morning (Tuesday), creating a huge cloud of dust that was visible from several parts of the island and nearby La Graciosa.

The rockfall happened in an area known as El Gayo, in the municipality of Haría, according to Enrique Espinosa, manager of Lanzarote’s Emergency Consortium.

Emergency services believe it was a natural landslide involving part of the cliff face. However, firefighters from La Graciosa were sent to the area on jet skis to check that nobody had been caught in the collapse.

Local Police officers from Haría were also due to inspect the area from land as a precaution.

Videos of the incident quickly spread on social media, showing the massive dust cloud rising from the cliffs and drifting across the coastline.

Authorities have not reported any injuries, but people are being urged to stay away from the affected area while inspections continue.
