One of Tenerife’s most wanted criminals has been arrested after a dramatic escape attempt from a gym in La Laguna, that was like the scene out of a movie. The man, known locally as “El Potajito”, had been on the run after failing to return to prison following authorised leave earlier this month.

He has been serving a sentence in Zaragoza but did not go back when his temporary leave ended, resulting in a police search. Well known to officers due to his criminal history, he quickly became one of the island’s most wanted fugitives.

Spotted at a Local Gym

The National Police were able to track him down after a member of the public reported seeing him at a gym in the Los Majuelos area of La Laguna.

Officers moved in quickly and surrounded the building, but as soon as the suspect realised police were there, he tried to escape by jumping out of a window.

A pursuit followed, lasting around 30 minutes, with officers chasing him both on foot and in patrol cars through nearby streets. Despite being told to stop several times, he continued trying to get away before eventually being caught and arrested.

A woman who was with him at the gym was also arrested after officers discovered she was also wanted by the courts.

Back in Custody

The suspect has now appeared before a judge in La Laguna and has been sent back to prison to continue his sentence. He may also face further charges for escaping and resisting arrest.

Police have praised the member of the public who alerted them, saying this kind of information is vital in helping track down wanted criminals.
