Four people have been arrested after being caught trying to smuggle cocaine and heroin into Tenerife II prison. Officers from the Guardia Civil have detained two men and two women, aged between 18 and 77, during routine security checks at the facility’s visitor entrance.
The suspects are said to be relatives and friends of inmates, and were allegedly attempting to sneak drugs into the prison by hiding them inside clothing with hand-sewn hems, in shoe linings, and in parcels. Their plan was uncovered when officers used X-ray scanners and a sniffer dog trained to detect narcotics, leading to the discovery of several doses of cocaine and heroin.
The arrests were made as part of a coordinated effort between the Guardia Civil and prison authorities to tighten security and prevent drug trafficking within the jail. Officers said the way the drugs were hidden shows that people are finding more clever and creative ways to try to get illegal substances into the prison.
The four detainees are all residents of various municipalities in Tenerife, and have been handed over to the authorities, along with the seized drugs as evidence.
Under Spain’s Penal Code, trafficking drugs that endanger public health can result in prison sentences of three to six years, and these penalties can be increased if the drugs were intended for sale or distribution among inmates.
