A 10-year-old boy has been killed, and his mother was left in critical condition after a brutal machete attack in the early hours of this morning (Friday) in the south of Tenerife. The attacker, the child’s father, was shot dead by police after violently resisting arrest and injuring an officer of the Guardia Civil.
The incident happened at around 1:00am in a home in the town of Cabo Blanco. When officers from the Guardia Civil and Arona Local Police entered the property, they found the boy already dead and his mother suffering life-threatening injuries, including severe cuts to her arms and legs. She has been admitted to hospital in a critical condition.
When approached, the attacker allegedly turned his machete on the officers, seriously injuring one Guardia Civil officer in the arm. He was taken to hospital and is expected to undergo surgery, but is not in a life-threatening condition.
Due to the level of violence and the immediate threat posed, police opened fire, killing the suspect at the scene.
Authorities have confirmed that the man had no previous criminal record and no history of complaints or reported domestic abuse. The investigation is being led by Court No. 1 of Arona, although the case will likely be transferred to the Court for Violence Against Women for the crimes relating to the partner and the child. Criminal proceedings regarding the attacker himself will be closed due to his death.
