Authorities are expected to begin the eviction of squatters today of the Callao Sport hotel in Callao Salvaje, Costa Adeje, where an estimated 200 people have been living in recent months, as seen on a Channel 4 documentary.
The property, which ceased operating as a hotel during the pandemic, has become an informal refuge for people unable to find affordable accommodation in the increasingly pressured housing market of south Tenerife.
Moroccan ‘mafia’ are allegedly renting out rooms to people who say they have been priced out of the rental market, and have no options but to stay illegally on the premises to protect their families.
Last month the authorities served an official 30-day eviction notice which come to fruition today, but local organisations have warned that the eviction, if carried out without a relocation plan, could leave many residents homeless from one day to the next.
Campaign groups argue that the situation highlights the deepening social impact of the housing crisis in Adeje and other tourist-driven municipalities across the Canary Islands.
Authorities have not publicly detailed where those affected may be relocated, though social services are reportedly reviewing cases to determine urgent needs. Meanwhile, residents and community supporters have called for the eviction to be halted until dignified housing solutions are secured.
The building has been the subject of legal proceedings, and the court order for eviction marks the latest step toward returning the property to its owners who have seen it illegally occupied, trashed, and still have to pay water and electricity bills while squatters are in it.
