El Médano to begin major seafront promenade renovation before Summer

El Médano, one of Tenerife’s most popular coastal destinations, will soon see a long-awaited upgrade to its seafront walkway, as renovation works on the iconic wooden promenade are set to begin before the end of May.

The project, which has a six-month completion timeline and a budget exceeding half a million euros, will be carried out in two phases, funded through the European Union’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.

First phase to begin by the end of May

In this initial stage, work will focus on the section of the promenade stretching from the central square in front of Hotel Médano to the area of Leocadio Machado. Once completed, the final phase, extending the refurbishment to Los Balos, will be put out to tender.

The renovation includes comprehensive repairs to the existing wooden structure, upgrades to benches and other public furniture, and general maintenance aimed at improving both safety and aesthetics for pedestrians.

The aim is to provide El Médano’s coastline with a more modern, cohesive, and accessible public space.

A long-overdue transformation

Built in 1992, the wooden boardwalk has gone more than three decades without a full refurbishment. Weathered by the harsh marine environment, it has fallen into disrepair in recent years, with parts of it even cordoned off for safety reasons.

The Mayor of Granadilla, José Domingo Regalado, said the works address a long-standing demand from the local community: “We are responding to a historic request from our neighbours. El Médano deserves it!”

The renovation reflects the municipality’s commitment to enhancing the town’s role as both a leading tourist hotspot and a vibrant local hub for residents.
