A Hungarian man wanted in his home country for drug trafficking offences has been arrested in the north of Tenerife, after allegedly living a double life as a property businessman on the island.
Officers from the National Police detained the man following an urgent European search request issued on 9th February. He has an outstanding three-year prison sentence in Hungary linked to international drug trafficking crimes committed around 10 years ago.
Tracked Through Property and Vehicle Records
Investigators quickly traced the suspect to the north of Tenerife after analysing police databases. Key leads included several properties and a vehicle registered in his name.
A surveillance operation was launched early on 10th February, focusing on a property in La Victoria de Acentejo, where the fugitive was believed to be living.
During the operation, officers intercepted a vehicle driven by a man matching the description provided by the Hungarian authorities. After confirming his identity, police arrested him on the spot to begin formal extradition proceedings.
Businessman by Day
What surprised investigators most was the suspect’s apparent integration into island life. Rather than living under the radar, he had established himself as a legitimate entrepreneur, reportedly running several property businesses catering to Hungarian tourists and residents in the Canary Islands.
Behind this façade of success, however, was a criminal record that had left him facing prison in his country of origin.
The suspect has now been placed at the disposal of the Spanish courts while arrangements are made for his return to Hungary.
Public Help Remains Key
The National Police has reiterated the importance of public cooperation in locating wanted individuals. Many fugitives, they warn, manage to blend into everyday life despite being subject to international arrest warrants.
Anyone with relevant information can consult the “most wanted” section of the official police website. Authorities also guarantee confidentiality through their dedicated email address for such cases.
