Two motorists narrowly avoided serious injury on the TF-82 in Tamaimo (Santiago del Teide) after large rocks crashed onto their vehicles following recent heavy rainfall.

Both drivers fortunately escaped unhurt, as they were mere centimetres from tragedy. The boulders caused extensive damage to the bodywork and windows of the cars.

The rockfall occurred on one of Tenerife’s most high-risk stretches of road during wet weather. The repeated incidents have prompted a strong reaction from the Mayor of Santiago del Teide, Emilio Navarro, who has long been urging the island authorities to put protective measures in place for drivers.

“We have been warning for years about the danger on the TF-82, with formal requests to the Tenerife Cabildo. Today we have yet another rockfall. The question is simple: what more has to happen before action is taken?” the mayor wrote on social media, sharing striking images of the damaged vehicles.

The risk on this road is heightened by the steep and vertical rock face bordering parts of the route, reminiscent of the cliffs of the Teno massif.

Local Police officers and road maintenance crews from the Cabildo attended the scene to begin clearing debris and securing the area.
