A 57-year-old diver was transferred from the port of La Restinga in El Hierro to Tenerife's Hospital Universitario de Canarias (HUC) yesterday (Friaday), after suffering from decompression sickness following a dive.
According to the Canary Islands' Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES), the incident was reported at 11:45am and they immediately dispatched the necessary emergency resources to deal with the incident.
The diver was initially assessed and treated by SUC medical personnel, and recognising the severity of the decompression sickness, they requested the deployment of a medical helicopter to fly the diver to Tenerife for hyperbaric treatment at the HUC hospital.
The helicopter crew prepared the patient for evacuation and safely transported him to the hospital's helipad, where he was admitted for urgent treatment and the medical team at the HUC took over his care.
