A wooden boat (cayuco) carrying 26 people, including 17 women - some of whom are pregnant - arrived by its own means yesterday morning (Friday) at the marina at Golf del Sur in San Miguel de Abona, in the south of Tenerife.
The emergency services were alerted at 8:07am by dock workers who noticed the small boat approaching the port, and the necessary emergency resources were dispatched including the Red Cross, National Police, and medical personnel.
Upon reaching land, the occupants of the boat received immediate medical assistance. Some, including a pregnant woman, were taken to hospital for treatment suffering from dehydration and hypothermia.
This is just one of several boats that have come to the Canary Islands in the last few days and highlights the ongoing challenges for the authorities who provide medical care and support for these migrant arrivals in need.
