A tragic accident has shaken the popular tourist resort of Costa Teguise in Lanzarote after a hotel balcony railing gave way in the early hours of Saturday morning, causing two British tourists to fall from a height of around six metres onto the ground below.

One of the men, aged 56, died instantly, while the other, aged 54, suffered severe injuries and remains in a critical condition in the intensive care unit at Hospital Doctor José Molina Orosa in Arrecife.

Emergency services were alerted at around 1:30am by the Canary Islands’ Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES), reporting that two people had fallen inside a hotel complex in the area.

Teams from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC), Local Police, and Guardia Civil, along with hotel security staff, were quickly on the scene. Unfortunately, paramedics were only able to confirm the death of one of the men, while the other was stabilised before being taken to hospital for urgent treatment.

The Guardia Civil has launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the incident and to assess whether there was any negligence in the maintenance of the railing or in the hotel’s safety protocols.

The tragedy has left both tourists and locals in shock, highlighting concerns about building safety standards in some accommodation complexes across the islands.
