An 84-year-old man in Santa Cruz de Tenerife has been reunited with his backpack containing €22,500 in cash after it was handed in by a local resident who found it at the city’s main bus station.
According to the Local Police, the pensioner had collected the money from an inheritance just hours before misplacing it at the Santa Cruz bus station on Friday.
Inside the bag, alongside some clothing, was an envelope filled with cash.
The following day, the visibly disorientated man walked into the Local Police station on Avenida Tres de Mayo. Officers reported that he was so confused he could barely remember why he had gone there, but with their help, he recalled that he had lost his belongings, including the inheritance money.
The man, who is currently living in a caravan on the streets of Santa Cruz, returned to the Lost Property Office on Monday, 22nd September. There, he discovered that his backpack had already been handed in by another Santa Cruz resident who had found it at the bus station and decided to take it straight to the authorities.
When the police and the pensioner opened the bag, they confirmed that all €22,500 was still inside. To ensure his safety, officers then accompanied him to a nearby bank so that the money could be securely deposited.
The Local Police praised the “exemplary” behaviour of the citizen who returned the backpack, highlighting it as a reminder of honesty and solidarity within the community.
