Arona Police cracks down on illegal street vending in Los Cristianos and Las Americas
The Local Police of Arona, in coordination with the National Police, have intensified operations against illegal street vending in the municipality’s busiest tourist areas, following rising concern from local businesses about the scale of the problem.
According to the Arona Town Hall, these actions aim to “ensure public safety, maintain proper use of public spaces, and protect local economic activity.”
Over the past few days, officers have increased patrols along key coastal hotspots, identifying individuals engaged in street trading and confiscating unlicensed goods.
So far this year, Arona’s local police have carried out 320 interventions and issued 168 seizure reports linked to illegal street sellers.
Business owners voice concern
The renewed enforcement comes after repeated complaints from the business community in southern Tenerife. In late October, Javier Cabrera, president of the Círculo de Empresarios y Profesionales del Sur de Tenerife (CEST), warned of the “serious lack of control” surrounding illegal street sales in the island’s main tourist zones, including Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas.
Cabrera said the issue is “harming public safety, discouraging investment, and damaging the image of Tenerife as a quality tourist destination.”
He raised the matter directly with Javier Plata, the Spanish Government’s sub-delegate in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, during a meeting also attended by senior National Police officials and members of the CEST board.
Business groups have long argued that unregulated street vending not only creates unfair competition but also affects visitors’ perceptions of the island. They are calling for sustained coordination between police forces and stronger penalties to tackle what they describe as a growing problem in resort areas.
