Adeje Town Council has unanimously approved a motion to progressively reduce and ultimately eliminate the use of explosive fireworks at municipal public events. The proposal aims to address growing concerns about the impact of loud pyrotechnics on public health, safety, and animal welfare.

The agreement includes a commitment to cut back or remove explosive fireworks in council-organised celebrations and to replace them gradually with less disruptive alternatives.

These include drone light shows, silent pyrotechnics, laser projections, and LED-based installations, all of which maintain the festive atmosphere without generating excessive noise.

In cases where explosive fireworks are still used, the council will introduce measures to minimise their impact. These include publishing firework schedules in advance, issuing safety recommendations, distributing ear protectors to vulnerable individuals, and creating controlled sensory refuges for people with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and their families.

Councillor Aythami Amaro, who defended the proposal, stated that the initiative responds to widespread concerns about the negative effects of loud fireworks.

He highlighted that extreme noise can significantly affect older people, children, and those with ASD or PTSD, as well as provoke anxiety and risk for pets and wildlife.
