AEMET warns that haze is returning to the Islands with severe weather conditions

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued a weather update for the Canary Islands, forecasting light calima (dust storms) in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura and potentially unhealthy air quality due to high PM10 particle concentrations.

A pre-alert remains in place for all islands due to these weather phenomena.

General Forecast for Wednesday

The forecast predicts mostly clear skies, with some morning clouds in the northern areas of mountainous islands. Temperatures are expected to remain steady or decrease slightly. Winds will range from moderate to strong from the northeast, with occasional very strong gusts, particularly on the southeast and northwest slopes during the morning hours.

Sea Conditions

Maritime conditions include easterly or northeasterly winds ranging from Force 4 to 7, resulting in choppy to rough seas. Coastal areas on the southwest, west, and south will experience variable winds and calmer seas. Northwest swells of 2 to 3 metres are expected.

The Canary Islands government continues its pre-alert for dangerous coastal conditions, affecting Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, and the northern and eastern coasts of Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

Island-Specific Weather Updates

TENERIFE

Clear skies with morning clouds in the northeast. Calima expected in eastern and southern regions during the afternoon, with PM10 concentrations potentially exceeding 200 µg/m³, leading to unhealthy air quality. Moderate to strong easterly winds, particularly between Tacoronte and La Victoria de Acentejo.
Temperatures: Min: 17°C, Max: 22°C.

GRAN CANARIA

Clear skies with morning clouds in the northeast. Calima expected in the east and south during the afternoon, with air quality affected by PM10 levels over 200 µg/m³. Winds moderate from the northeast, shifting to easterly.
Temperatures: Min: 18°C, Max: 22°C.

FUERTEVENTURA

Clear skies with calima throughout the day. Air quality will likely deteriorate in the afternoon. Winds moderate, shifting from northeast to southeast.
Temperatures: Min: 16°C, Max: 22°C.

LANZAROTE

Clear skies with calima, especially in the afternoon. PM10 levels may exceed 200 µg/m³, causing very unhealthy air quality. Moderate winds from northeast, shifting to southeast.
Temperatures: Min: 15°C, Max: 20°C.

Public Warnings

The public are advised to take precautions against the calima, particularly those with respiratory conditions. Reduced air quality may pose health risks, and outdoor activities should be limited during peak periods of dust concentration.

People in coastal areas are urged to exercise caution due to hazardous sea conditions.
