AEMET issues storm warning as rain causes havoc on Tenerife motorways

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has activated yellow weather warnings today (Friday) in the Canary Islands for storms and coastal phenomena that, predictably, will affect all the Islands starting on Sunday.

There is currently an active warning due to strong waves, but the Canary Islands Government, through the General Directorate of Emergencies, has declared a pre-alert situation starting at 7:00am tomorrow morning (Saturday).

The rain is already causing problems in the north of the island with several accidents on the TF-1 and TF-5 motorways causing tailbacks several miles long this morning.

According to the Emergency Services Coordination Centre, there were two accidents on the TF-5 near El Sauzal and inside the Padre Anchieta tunnel in La Laguna, and one on the TF-1 near Añaza heading towards Santa Cruz.

Drivers are asked to take extreme caution as it looks like the rain is here to stay over the weekend and into next week.
