A British tourist drowns in the sea off the coast of Tenerife

A 58-year-old British man has died after drowning in the sea off the coast of Tenerife yesterday afternoon (Friday), near the Teno Lighthouse in the municipality of Buenavista del Norte.

The tragic incident occurred around 5:00pm when two other people in the sea pulled the affected man out of the water, who was in cardiorespiratory arrest, and one of them, a nurse, performed the first resuscitation manoeuvres to try and revive him, while the other called 112.

A GES helicopter, a SUC ambulance, and a doctor and nurse from the Los Silos Health Centre were dispatched to the area by the Emergency Services, where the helicopter airlifted him to an accessible place for the ambulance so that he could be treated.

Unfortunately, despite the efforts of the health personnel, the man couldn’t be recovered and his death was confirmed.

The Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES) also sent a team of SUC psychologists to care for a child who was with the man when he died.

After the man’s death was confirmed, the Guardia Civil took charge of the proceedings and guarded the body until the coroner gave permission for it to be taken for official identification and autopsy.
