The Guardia Civil has arrested seven people for offences of drug trafficking after they intercepted an inflatable boat carrying 1,715 kilograms of hashish off the coast of Tenerife.

According to the official report from the Guardia Civil, the operation took place at 4:00am on May 1st (Wednesday), after the boat was located with the help of the General Directorate of Surveillance of the Moroccan Territory (DGST).

The DGST alerted Canarian authorities that a boat suspected to be carrying a large amount of narcotic substances had left Morrocco heading for Tenerife where it was believed they would unload the drugs for distribution in the Canary Islands.

Consequently, the Guardia Civil Command in Santa Cruz devised a special operation, during which agents caught the seven suspects red-handed at the Mesa del Mar promenade in the municipality of Tacoronte.

The suspects were caught unloading a large number of bundles from a boat into a van. Five of the detainees were handling the drugs, while the other two were crew of the boat. All seven were immediately arrested, and the 1,715 kilograms of hashish were seized along with the boat, the van, and various items such as a satellite phone, a GPS navigation, and numerous mobile phones.

The detainees have already been brought before the Duty Court of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, which ordered the provisional imprisonment of all seven of them.
