The Guardia Civil has seized 241 counterfeit watches from the luggage of a passenger arriving on a flight to Tenerife, as part of routine border and customs controls on the island.
The operation was carried out by officers from the Fiscal and Border Section at Tenerife North Airport, working alongside customs officials from the Spanish Tax Agency. A man has been placed under investigation on suspicion of committing an offence against industrial property rights.
According to the Guardia Civil, officers became suspicious during passenger checks after noticing the traveller’s nervous behaviour. Following an interview, agents decided to inspect his luggage, where they discovered a large quantity of counterfeit watches designed to imitate high-end luxury brands.
The 241 fake watches were carefully organised inside the luggage by brand. An initial inventory confirmed that three well-known luxury watch brands had been affected by the counterfeit items.
All seized watches, along with the official case files, have been handed over to the customs administrator of the Spanish Tax Agency. The representatives of the affected brands have been formally informed of their rights as injured parties in the case.
Authorities warn that counterfeit goods not only cause significant financial damage to legitimate businesses but can also pose risks to consumer safety and health due to their lack of quality controls.
