21 deaths from Covid since Friday, a record number in the seventh wave

The coronavirus infection curve among people over 60 years of age continues to experience a sharp drop in the Canary Islands and the number of deaths is once again at a maximum in this seventh wave of the pandemic.

Today (Tuesday), the Ministry of Health reported 21 deaths of people with the virus on the islands since Friday, 14 in Tenerife, 6 in Gran Canaria and 1 in El Hierro. All were aged between 56 and 96 years old, had previous pathologies, and were admitted to hospital.

So far in July, there have been 117 deaths of people with Covid reported in the Canary Islands and it is already the third deadliest month in the more than two years of the pandemic, after January, with 280 deaths, and February with 142.

However, what has fallen sharply are infections among people over 60 years of age, the only group that is being monitored in this new phase of surveillance and control that began at the end of March.

The Ministry of Health notified of 926 new cases today since Friday, and all the islands, except El Hierro, have the accumulated incidence of infections both over seven and fourteen days at medium risk, according to the epidemiological report published by Public Health. In four days the IA7 has fallen 93 points to 452.64 and the IA14 has fallen by 228 points to 1,108.19 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

As of today there are 460 people admitted to Canarian hospitals with Covid, ten more than on Friday, of which 433 are in conventional beds (12 more than four days ago) and 27 in ICU (two less).

According to the Public Health report, Gran Canaria, Tenerife and La Palma have a medium risk for the occupancy of conventional beds. El Hierro has this indicator at very high risk and the rest of the islands at low risk.

The situation of the ICUs is at low risk or controlled circulation in all its indicators on all the islands except Gran Canaria, which has both the admission rate in the last seven days and the occupancy rate at medium risk.
