The National Geographic Institute (IGN) reported that a magnitude 2.5 earthquake was detected 2:17pm yesterday, Thursday, southeast of the municipality of Arico, not far from Tenerife South Airport.
According to official data released by the institute, this latest seismic event was registered at a depth of 29 kilometres, at coordinates 28.1578 latitude and –16.4349 longitude.
Although recorded close to the coast, the IGN’s map shows the epicentre was located offshore.
Seismic activity in the Canary Islands is not unusual, as the archipelago sits on a volcanic hotspot. The islands regularly experience small, low-magnitude earthquakes linked to natural geological processes beneath the ocean floor.
Most of these tremors are too weak to be felt by residents, but they are continuously monitored by the IGN as part of the region’s ongoing volcanic surveillance network.
No incidents or damage have been reported.
