A 12-year-old girl was found walking alone inside the San José Tunnel in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on Wednesday morning, as she made her way to school.
The incident has prompted an official investigation to determine how the child ended up inside the busy and dangerous tunnel.
Local police received an alert around 8:00am, warning of a child walking through the tunnel. Officers from the Traffic Unit were dispatched to the scene and quickly located the girl, who was safely escorted to her school.
The Local Protection and Support Unit (UPAL) has since taken over the case, continuing to monitor and provide support. Meanwhile, the Las Palmas Provincial Prosecutor’s Office has issued a report on the situation.
Authorities have confirmed that the investigation remains open, as they work to clarify the circumstances that led to the girl’s presence in such a hazardous environment, which could easily have had a tragic ending.
