100 people evicted from shacks and caves on the Tenerife south coast

The Guardia Civil and the Provincial Coastal Service evicted almost 100 people from 45 makeshift shacks and caves yesterday (Thursday) from the coast of Granadilla in the south of Tenerife,

25 officers were involved in the operation, under the direction of the Granadilla Council, in the areas of La Mareta and Charco del Clérigo, alongside 35 workers from the municipal company Sermugran, who were there to remove the shacks and other waste found in the area.

According to a statement from the town hall, eight trucks were required to tidy up the coastline due to the large amount of rubbish, not only where the people were staying, but in general in the area.

The councillor for Security in Granadilla, Carmen Dolores Rodríguez, emphasised that the operation "proceeded smoothly, thanks to the excellent work of the Local Police and the Guardia Civil, who acted in a coordinated manner, ensuring the success of the operation at all times."

She also explained that the people involved, mostly European nationals, were notified of the evacuation order on March 13th and that some had already left because many of the caves were already empty when the police got there.

Lastly, she added that only one arrest was necessary during the eviction and no minors were among the people residing there.
