Guests complain of ‘seagull problem’ at new Barcelo hotel

The much-anticipated Barcelo Playa Blanca hotel has only been open for a few short months, and as well as causing controversy when it was being built, it continues to do so now.

The new 4-star hotel is the biggest in Lanzarote with 720 rooms and facilities on a 100,000 square metre site just 100 metres from the sea, which is bringing its own problems with some uninvited guests.

Several people who have stayed at the new luxury hotel have complained on social media, and have contacted us here at the Canarian Weekly, about a ‘seagull’ problem at the resort that management don’t seem too concerned about.

As you can see in the images, flocks of seagulls are staking their claim to the main pool at the resort with, at times, literally hundreds on the surface of the water.

Although many people see this as a novelty, experts in the water treatment industry recommend that the water should be tested immediately for diseases that these birds can carry such as legionella, E.coli, and coliforms, and be closed if the tests are positive.

If any of these bacteria are found in the water they can be harmful to humans, especially children, if ingested by swallowing water when swimming or playing in the pool posing a potential health and safety problem for guests at the hotel.

Guests claim they have spoken to the management at Barcelo Playa Blanca hotel who dismissed their claims and “didn’t seem interested”.
