The Canary Islands remain on pre-alert for high temperatures

The heat alert in the Canary Islands, which has been in effect since April 10th, has been downgraded to a pre-alert today (Monday), with maximum temperatures expected to reach or exceed 28-32 degrees Celsius, especially on the western and southern slopes of the islands.

The General Directorate of Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands has made this decision, effective from 10am this morning, based on the forecast from the Spanish Met Office (AEMET).

However, they have warned of exceptionally high temperature values for this time of year, accompanied by more dry air and varying intensities of calima (a fine, dusty haze).

Starting from Tuesday and at least until Thursday, temperatures will gradually decrease and return to normal values for this time of year, and no rain is expected in the islands during these days.

Meanwhile, Eltiempo.es explains that this current “mini heatwave” is due to a potent high-pressure ridge and a robust surface anticyclone, combined with the absence of cloud cover and an increase in hours of sunshine. Additionally, from Thursday onwards, a very warm and dry air mass from Africa is expected to advance over the Canary Islands along with more calima.
