Yellow weather warnings in the Canary Islands due to the effects of Storm Nelson

The Canary Islands has active weather warnings for today (Thursday) and tomorrow, Good Friday, due to the effects of Storm Nelson which is bringing strong gusts of wind, dangerous sea conditions and more rain to the archipelago, according to information from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET).

WINDS:

Today, fronts associated with Storm Nelson have led to the activation of yellow warnings due to very strong gusts of wind on five islands:

Tenerife:

Northwest wind that will mainly affect the metropolitan area in the north of the island with maximum gusts of 70 kilometres per hour, and some very strong gusts on peaks towards the end of the day.

La Palma:

Wind from the west turning to the northwest with maximum gusts of 70 km/h in the east and west of the Island. Maximum gusts of 80 km/h are expected at peaks, although in high areas it may reach 90 km/h.

La Gomera:

West wind mainly affecting inland areas and summits with maximum gusts of 70 km/h.

El Hierro:

West wind turning northwest, especially affecting the summits and northeast slope. Maximum gusts of 80 km/h that on summits that may reach 90 km/h later in the day.

Gran Canaria:

Maximum gusts of 70 km/h. West wind mainly affecting inland areasand summits.

RAIN:

La Palma will also be under a yellow warning for heavy showers which are more likely in the northern half of the island at the end of the day. An accumulated rainfall of 15 mm/hour, which will especially affect the western and northern slopes.

In El Hierro, the risk of rain is also active, especially on the northern slopes, also with an accumulated precipitation of 15 mm/hour (or 15 litres per square metre).

COASTAL PHENOMENA:

In addition, on the islands of La Palma and El Hierro there will be a yellow warning due to dangerous sea conditions with a front coming from the northwest that will cause waves of 4 to 5 metres high, and also in Tenerife due to a Force 7 west or southwest wind of 50 to 61 km/h off the north coast.

Based on the latest AEMET forecasts, the Government of the Canary Islands has declared an alert for coastal phenomena throughout the Archipelago and a pre-alert for wind in Tenerife, La Palma and El Hierro.

WEATHER WARNINGS FOR GOOD FRIDAY:

Tomorrow there will be a yellow warning for strong showers in La Palma, the northeast of El Hierro, and all of Tenerife during the early morning, and for very strong gusts of wind from the northwest on the summits of La Palma and in the northeast midlands of El Hierro.

There are also locally very strong northwesterly winds expected in the high areas of Tenerife.

Likewise, the yellow warning for adverse coastal phenomena is extended to the north of Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, and on the islands of La Palma and El Hierro it will be raised to an orange warning.
