Tenerife is the hottest place in Spain with temperatures of 37°C and thick haze

The east coast of Tenerife is like an oven today with a thick calima causing an intense haze and temperatures of 37°C around the vicinity of the south airport.

This haze, which is coming into the Canary Islands from the east, is affecting Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, and now Tenerife, has reduced visibility dramatically, especially at attitude for planes coming into land, and the air quality as you can feel the dust and sand in your eyes and throat.

The Canary Islands currently have several active weather warnings including a pre-alert for forest fires in Tenerife and Gran Canaria. These are unusual for this time of year but occur when conditions meet the Three30s:

  • Temperatures above 30°C.
  • Winds above 30km/h.
  • Humidity below 30%.

This alert situation means that the emergency services are on standby in case of an outbreak, BBQ areas have been closed, and fires and the use of machinery that causes sparks are forbidden as they can easily and quickly ignite the dry undergrowth in these conditions.
