82-year-old woman seriously injured in fire in Canary Island hospital

An 82-year-old woman suffered serious burns yesterday afternoon (Wednesday) when a fire broke out in a room at the San Roque Meloneras Hospital in San Bartolomé de Tirajana (Gran Canaria), as reported by the Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES).

The elderly woman was transported by ambulance to the Insular University Hospital of Gran Canaria for urgent treatment, according to the CECOES report, which also mentioned that due to smoke, the whole first floor of the hospital and the emergency services were evacuated preventively until it was deemed safe to return.

Once firefighters had extinguished the flames, which affected one room, ventilated the area, and ensured it was safe, they proceeded to rehouse the evacuated patients. The National and Local Police secured the area and collaborated with emergency resources, which were activated by 1-1-2 after the fire was reported at 3:58pm.
