Youngsters’ successful search for recyclables

ARONA’S primary schoolchildren, taking part in a recycling scheme, have collected enough objects to fill an astonishing 1,771 containers between them.

They held more than 30 tonnes of plastic, tin-cans and corks, along with other recyclables, collected since last November, which have been put to good use.

A total of 5,233 youngsters took part in the project, which began last year under the campaign umbrella of “My school recycles”.

The incentive was to raise awareness among the younger pupils, and the rules of the contest meant that the kids had to fill different types of containers with various types of

recyclables. And they really did respond to the challenge.

Children from schools across Arona attended La Plaza del Pescadores, in Los Cristianos on Tuesday, which was World Environmental Day, to receive special awards for their efforts.

Arona Mayor Jose Julian Mena was accompanied by Yurena Garcia, Arona’s Head of Recruitment, as well as Francisco Marichal, to present the children’s awards.

Some of them comprised cheques, to a total value of 10,450 euros.

The recycling money, raised by the children, will be used by the award-winning schools to buy extra materials and subsidise excursions, as well as contributing to many other uses.

Mayor Mena thanked all the students, as well as the parents and the teachers, for collaborating with the campaign.
