Wow! New Big Bang alerts Canary Islands

A GAMMA-RAY burst, the most powerful explosion since the Big Bang, has occurred in a distant galaxy, and those in the Canary Islands, equipped with huge telescopes were the first to witness it.

The Daily Mail newspaper reported that the extremely powerful blast created more energy in a few seconds than the sun will burn in its 10-billion-year lifetime.

Gamma-ray bursts are the most powerful explosions known in the universe. A set of new studies believed they can generate even more energetic light beams than astronomers previously realised.

The powerful blast, discovered by more than 300 scientists from around the world, led by researchers from Curtin University in Western Australia, now has the record for the brightest light ever seen from Earth.

Researcher Dr Gemma Anderson said gamma-ray bursts were the most energetic events in the universe.

She noted that the bursts happen so far away that they can be detected only when the beams are pointed directly at Earth, lasting from a few milliseconds to a few hours.

“They are likely produced by a massive star, being blown apart in a supernova, with the resulting explosion leaving behind a black hole,” the researcher told the daily newspaper.

This gamma-ray burst was said to have reached Earth on 14th January 2019, and was detected by two space satellites: the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, built by University College London, and the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope.

This gamma-ray burst was named GRB 190114C and, within 22 seconds, its co-ordinates were sent to astronomers across the globe.

First to survey the bursts were astronomers at the Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) telescopes on the La Palma Canary Island.
