Water problems in Guia de Isora

According to Guia de Isora town councillor Antonio Alvarez technicians from Entemanser SA, which is the company responsible for the water supply in the borough of Guia de Isora, noticed a strange smell coming from the water tanks and quickly took a sample for analysis where it was discovered that the water had been contaminated by diesel.

The Health Department immediately cut off the water supply in the affected area while tests were carried out on all the water tanks as a precautionary measure , according to the mayor of Guia de Isora Pedro Martin.

Initial investigations would indicate that the diesel could have entered the water supply as the result of an accident in the water gallery where employees were working at some 3,000m below the surface in a similar way to “accidents” occurred in Guimar, Arafo, El Sauzal and La Laguna many years ago but scientists have not ruled out other causes.

While the investigations are being carried out Guia de Isora town council has organised the distribution of free water to everyone affected by the incident until the water supply is reconnected. The water is being carried from village to village on board huge container lorries.

The Canarian Health Department praised the rapid action of the council which took immediate action even though the diesel was discovered in the middle of the night making sure that first thing in the morning absolutely everyone was aware of the problem using loud speakers in each of the villages.

Even when the water reappears in the houses it must not even be used for preparing food, washing clothes or personal hygiene explained Pedro Martin until the all clear has been given by the Regional Health Department.
