Turkish crew save pregnant woman, and other migrants

A TURKISH ship, bound for Morocco, picked up 24 African migrants last Sunday, 60 nautical miles off the Gran Canaria coast.
The crew spotted their boat and changed its course towards the small vessel. Three children and a pregnant woman were among those saved by the Ekmen Trans sailors.
The pregnant woman was taken to hospital by helicopter, while the rest of the migrants disembarked at Las Palmas port.
Many migrants see the Canary Islands, off the Moroccan coast, as the only viable option remaining to them, because the European Union spends millions of dollars cutting off land routes through northern Africa.
The EU officials consider it a launchpad for asylum in mainland Europe.
