Trekking trio raise a huge sum for charity

ON Saturday 28th October, Live PAWS had a visit from two of their volunteers, Hayley Butler and Sarah Wagstaff, who, after a two-day day hike up Mount Tiede, along with Sarah’s partner, Adam Walsh, had raised an astonishing €4,257 for the charity.

It was only last month that Hayley was the recipient of the Best Female Singer award at the TEAs, so she has a lot to be proud of, at the moment!

The cable car took them to the bottom of Mount Teide, where, along with 11 others, they started their journey to the summit.

The first day involved five hours of walking. After an overnight stop at the mountain refuge, the group woke at 4am to resume their climb. With head torches strapped on, they set off at 4.30am, for another two hours of uphill efforts!

The last 30 minutes to the top were tough; a steep incline, a temperature of -4°, and a strong wind. But what a view they got at the top! Watching the colours roll up over the horizon was stunning! After sunrise came the long, seven-hour descent to their car.

Siobhan, from the charity, was full of praise for the group, saying:

“Congratulations to Hayley, Sarah and Adam. We know it was tough, but you did it!

“They are not natural walkers or trekkers, but they worked hard to reach their goal, and have raised way more than they ever expected.

“Thank you to everyone for your support for the Tiede Team, not only during their training and hike, but also for your generosity in contributing to the fantastic sum raised for the animals in need.”
