Tenerife edge closer to safety with unconvincing home win

CD Tenerife 1  SD Ponferradina 0

After the disappointment of their trip to Oviedo, Rubén Baraja had to raise his players spirits as Ponferradina came to the Heliodoro last Sunday, looking for three points themselves to climb up the league table.

He started with a now familiar 4-4-2 formation with Ortolá still in goal for Dani Hernández, and Dani Gomez up front with Joselu.
They did however seem to be missing a talisman like Milla, who has blue and white blood in his veins, and lost fluency with Aitor and Undabarrena in midfield.
Ponferradina started conservatively with a 4-5-1 formation, and Tenerife struggled to find a way through, and in fact, neither team had a shot on target during the first 45 minutes.
The highlight of the half was a chance for Joselu in the 29th minute, who was played through by Lasure, but his shot went over the bar of Renés goal.
10 minutes later Nahuel had a great chance to take the lead for the home team, when the ball fell to him on the penalty spot, but he too fired high over the Ponferradina goal.
Thus a tedious and uninteresting first half came to an end with the score still 0-0.
The second half started with a yellow card for Aitor Sanz, which means he will be suspended for this weekends trip to Fuenlabrada.
After an hour Baraja made his first change taking off Nahuel for Bermejo to mix it up a bit, and 7 minutes later Joselu and Dani Gómez had the possibility of scoring the first goal of the night.
Joselu flicked on a corner from the front post which René stopped but couldn’t hold on to it, and it fell to Dani Gómez who mis-kicked it and Ponferradina were able to clear. That same play continued and Tenerife appealed for handball against Son, but neither the referee nor VAR agreed, and play continued.
Five minutes later, Baraja made another change when Javi Muñoz replaced Undabarrena, and in the 74th, Suso came on for Joselu completing his three changes.
Every coach likes to see the game change when he makes substitutions, and Baraja was made to look good when the game changed in the 76th minute.
Tenerife were attacking with more clarity, and in one of these plays a Lasure through ball found central defender Sipcic in front of goal, who beautifully flicked it on the turn past René into the back of the Ponferradina net.
Before anyone could celebrate, VAR intervened to review the action analyzing a possible offside for the Serbian, who already has two goals this season, while the players watched from the center circle.
Not seeing any infringement the referee signalled a goal and Tenerife were 1-0 up with less than 15 minutes to play.
In the closing minutes of the game, Ponferradina looked to be rushing as time was running out, to attack Ortolá’s goal and somehow find an equaliser.
In the 84th minute, they tested the Tenerife goalkeeper for the first time with a shot by Valcarce, that was deflected by the goalkeeper for a corner. It was the only shot on target by Ponferradina in the entire match.
This was the last action of a disappointing game, and Ponferradina received just punishment for their approach to it.
For Tenerife it was a solid performance defensively although their finishing wasn’t up to standard, but it’s the result that matters and this three points pushes them up to 12th in the league and closer to safety.
At time of going to print, the Department of Health and the Spanish Football Association, have announced that all La Liga and Segunda division matches are suspended for two weeks and will be re-scheduled for a later date.
It’s a difficult situation but sensibility must prevail, and CDT will have wanted to play as they are in a rich vein of form, plus if they could have continued with these results… who knows!
Now, we will have to wait and see.
