Teachers helpless to handle violent kids

NINE out of 10 teachers in Spain admit that violence in their classrooms, such as fights, abuse or vandalism, render them helpless to do anything about it.

A study by the CSIF union reveals that a shocking 75% of teachers believe they have little or no authority over students, or even influence with their families, and over a quarter of those surveyed say life is not pleasant for them.

The study is based on 2,000 questionnaires, distributed to teachers in public primary and secondary schools in all eight regions of Spain.

Mario Gutiérrez, Head of Education at CSIF, believes that cuts in teaching staff, an increase in the ratio of students per class, and a shortfall of support staff, are all adding to fuel to the fire.

“Sometimes, teachers do not have enough authority to stop these situations,” said Gutiérrez.
