Supermarket waves a farewell to plastic

ONE of Spain’s best-known supermarkets has ditched single-use plastic carrier bags, in favour of sustainable alternatives.

Mercadona, which owns 1,636 supermarkets across Spain and Portugal, has announced that the plastic shopping bags will no longer be available.

The Spanish, family-run brand, is offering three alternatives: paper bags, large raffia bags and longer-life plastic bags, which contain between 50-70% recycled material.

A company spokesperson said, in support of the “circular economy”, that the recycled bags use plastic packaging from their own supermarkets.

Social media users hit out at the supermarket’s huge consumption of plastic in their products, including plastic gloves in the bakery section, which, say Mercadona, it is “working on”.
